The third edition of API Std 1163, Qualification of In-pipeline Inspection Systems, was published in September 2021.

The Standard covers the identification, selection, reporting, validation, validation and use of steel in-pipeline testing (ILI) systems for transporting gases and hazardous liquids onshore and offshore.  It includes, but is not limited to: tether, self-propelled or automated systems for detecting metal loss, cracks, mechanical damage, pipe geometry, and pipe positioning or mapping.  The standard applies to prior art and technology under development.  This standard is an overview document that provides performance-based requirements for internal inspection systems, including procedures, personnel, equipment, and associated software.
